Our next Book Club is right around the corner! We’ve been reading another New York Times Best Seller: Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein.
A non fiction work, Orenstein searches for answers on how the messages our society sends to young girls affect the types of women they become. Being a princess is just make-believe; eventually they grow out of it . . . or do they ? In search of answers, Orenstein visited Disneyland, trolled American Girl Place, and met parents of beauty-pageant preschoolers tricked out like Vegas showgirls. The stakes turn out to be higher than she ever imagined. From premature sexualization to the risk of depression to rising rates of narcissism, the potential negative impact of this new girlie-girl culture is undeniable—yet armed with awareness and recognition, parents can effectively counterbalance its influence in their daughters’ lives.
Join us on Tuesday, February 5th at 7:30pm at the home of our Membership Chair Katie Ziegenhirt for a night of food, fun, and some book discussion.
